I don't think this a surprise to anybody. The Abortion debate cuts across party lines, a majority of Catholics voted for Obama in 2008. 40 Democrat congressman are on the the side of Pro-Life.

Not much for GOP to do in this battle. Would be nice if they push for insurance reform.

Oh, let me add, an audit of Planned Parenthood would be nice. and pray for Father Norman Weslin, age 78, who was arrested in front of Pelosi's office

The US Conference of Catholic Bishops just handed Nancy Pelosi

a massive tactical victory. This is from their letter issued earlier today:

The Catholic Bishops of the United States have supported adequate and affordable health care for decades. Our Bishops’ conference has been working with Members of Congress, the Administration and others to help fashion health care reform legislation that truly protects the life, dignity, health and consciences of all. We are very pleased that the House leadership has agreed to allow the essential Stupak-Pitts-Kaptur-Dahlkemper-Lipinski-Smith Amendment to be considered by the House. This amendment will add to the Affordable Health Care for America Act (H.R. 3962) crucial provisions that maintain the current protections against abortion funding and mandates. Specifically, it will achieve our objective of applying the provisions of the Hyde amendment to the public health plan and on the affordability credits in the exchanges called for in the legislation.

The nation and the Congress are now engaged in an intense and much needed national discussion on how to provide affordable and accessible health care for all. We are not experts on health care policy and cannot assess every provision of legislation as complex as this proposal. However, health care legislation is not just political, technical, or economic, but also moral. Health care reform is about life and death, who can take their children to the doctor and who cannot, who can afford decent health care coverage and who are left to fend for themselves. For the Catholic Church, health care is a basic human right and providing health care is an essential ministry. We pick up the pieces of this failing system in our emergency rooms, clinics, parishes and communities. This is why we strongly support Congressional action on health care reform which protects human life and dignity and serves the poor and vulnerable as a moral imperative and an urgent national priority.

You can read more about it here.

It is pretty clear that while Boehner was busy demonstrating that he doesn't know the difference between the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence for the benefit of the TV audience, Pelosi was working the phones and cutting a deal.

Sojourners support health reform not elective abortion

Now Planned Parenthood has come out of their hole. Against the amendment to ban elective abortion. The vote on this amendment "today" will effect the reelectibility of many congressman. Pro-life groups "will" record who votes for and who votes against -The vote will take place in the light of day.

If abortion funding was not in the bill why is Planned Parenthood against the amendment?

I have no idea what you are trying to say

But for now just deal with the fact that the USCCB has sided with Nancy Pelosi, which rather destroys your previously articulated fantasy that all Catholics are naturally party of your nutty fundy "base".

The ammendment will be voted on - looks like today - per Foxnews

The debate on weather or not abortion is in the bill is now mute. If it is not then Pelosi could vote for the Amendment an achive a massive victory. It was expected that Pelosi would offer something as a compromise - less than removing the funding, and as you point out she did; I would not call it a bad faith negotiations but the funding issue was not resolved in late night closed door negotiations.

If abortion funding was not

If abortion funding was not in the bill why is Planned Parenthood against the amendment?

That's a question you should have been asking yourself before ranting about this in public.

The answer, btw, is because the amendment in question would have barred any private insurance company taking part in the health insurance exchange it establishes from offering abortion coverage. IOW, people who already have abortion coverage through their private insurer would be stripped of it, if the insurer became a part of the exchange.

I could see the problem if Insurance companies could only ...

provide the public option. Or if say the whole thing becomes a single payment health care system. As long as it is still an open market system, people have a choice about their healthcare.
