On March 31st, there will be a special election in New York's 20th Congressional District replacing Sen. Kristen Gillibrand. Recent polling has shown Republican Jim Tedisco with a great shot to take back the seat, building on our surprise win in LA-2 and recent momentum in Virginia.

There is no more important test of this new momentum than victory in NY-20 in less than 20 days. This is why I'm proud to have helped set up 20K for NY-20 -- a fundraising campaign to raise $20,000 to fuel GOTV efforts in the final days.

Hundreds of people have already banded together online, giving $20 or more towards the fight in NY-20. Now we need to kick it up a notch.

If you give $20, $40, $200 or whatever you can afford -- you'll see the bottle fill up in real time. If you give $10 or more, you'll also see your name recognized on the scroll -- if you choose to share it.

This is the best chance we've had to take back a seat in a blue state in a long, long time. Jim's opponent is millionaire investor Scott Murphy, who can self-fund and doesn't need the support of the online community like Jim does.

I personally would not mind to see someone like Katon Dawson (and by extension Rush Limbaugh) become the public face of the GOP, i.e. another middle aged conservative white guy from the rural southern parts of the U.S..

According to some blogs, lots of GOP folks are also unhappy with Steele's handling of the NY-20 election too; if Tedisco wins, it will certainly not be thanks to him.

Ken Blackwell

I noticed that Ken Blackwell had a very harsh statement quoted today about Steele's abortion comments in the recent GQ interview. It didn't go MSM. I seem to remember it attributed to Roll Call or The Hill newspapers. So it was targeted to the GOP movers and shakers, not the unwashed masses.

The GOP almost needs to hope Tedisco blows this election, so they will have a damn good reason upon which to hang the ousting of Steele. If they are seen as trying to fire him without cause, simply for his gaffe statements, they open themselves up to charges of racism.

Especially if Steele is replaced by second place vote getter Katon Dawson, who could be the poster child for redneck racists. Not fair, I know. But expect the attack to come. Unless, Ken Blackwell is the replacement. In this political atmosphere the GOP may have no choice other than to replace a brother with a brother.

Why Support An Obama Republican?

Tedisco's problems stem from his refusal to break from Obama's spending spree. He looks like a fool everytime he says he hasn't made his mind up on the stimulus packages. Tedisco's candidacy is not a referendum on conservatives vs. Obama. Tedisco would have been the one Republican who voted for the stimulus.

You know, I think I've forgotten more about politics than most of the "experts" ever knew.  If Jim Tedisco was to the left of Bernie Sanders the media would paint his defeat as a crushing blow to the opposition to Obama---and if the Democrat was to the right of Tom Coburn his election would be a ringing endorsement of the Obama agenda. 

How hard is THAT to figure out? 

I was going to write up a post about the legions of errors made by the Tedisco campaign but unlike some so-called :Republicans" and "conservatives" I'm sorta not big on shooting the wounded in the middle of the battle. They'll be plenty of time to court-martial folks next month.

Let's see, Jim Buckley was elected once to the Senate. Jack Kemp has been out of the House for about a generation. Peter King is moderate on some labor issues. McHugh likes military and post office spending.  And let's not talk about the State Senate since about 1997.

Since Thomas Dewey was a moderate Republican maybe NY elected a conservative Republican Governor before Al Smith was elected in the 20's

If you expect a Tom Coburn to suddenly get elected in the Empire State I think you'll be waiting quite awhile.  The political center of gravity in the state just isn;t that far right. This isn't SC, which should elect two Jim DeMints. A Lindsay Graham is probably as far right as even an upstate district could ever get elected.

Politics is the art of the possible.  Not that the NY Republicans have tried very hard to sell conservatism, but there's only so far one can go right and win there. The fact the NYCP fell behind some other third parties might suggest the center-left is kinda strong there, now doesn;t it?

It’s one poll. I saw a couple of new polls that had Tedisco up by a few points. I think Tedisco will wind up winning in a close race, so I wouldn’t get too discouraged yet. And if I recall correctly, Obama won the district with 51% of the vote.  discount dental plan
