One Small Step for the Right

To echo and build on Patrick's post.

When a few of us channeled our efforts to RebuildtheParty.com, we intended to jumpstart the conversation about what the Party must do from a tactical standpoint to rebuild.  We did not intend to provide an all-encompassing manifesto that will guarantee a renewed Republican majority.

Our philosophy: rather than sit around and meet behind closed doors or wait for the perfect plan, let’s get started right away making changes within the party infrastructure.

Let’s impact the conversations about what the Party must do to rebuild.  Let’s ensure, as a start, that the next Republican National Committee Chairman sets the right tone from a tactical perspective.  Most importantly, let’s open up the process so that we, the Republican people, have a say in electing our next Party Chairman.

If we, or anyone, had a precise, complete roadmap for what the Party must do from an ideological or policy perspective, what would we have left to talk about on sites like this one?

The direction the Party heads is up to you, it’s up to me, it’s up to anyone who cares to participate in the process.  It’s certainly also up to Obama and the Left as their actions will often drive our reactions.

The political roadmap for the Right is a perpetual work in progress, but one that must be based on the core principles of limited government and individual liberty.  As Bobby Jindal and Tim Pawlenty have suggested recently, we must harmonize conservative principles and fresh solutions when confronting today's challenges.

That’s easier said than done.  In fact, it’s a gargantuan challenge, and one that should not be left in the hands of the entrenched consultant class of the last decade, the conservative movement dead wood (as Erick Erickson calls them) and purely self-promotional politicians.

If the RNC -- and up and down-ballot campaigns and the grassroots activists they depend on -- adopts the principles as outlined on RebuildtheParty.com, we can build a more active coalition of right-leaning Americans who want to make a difference.  We will have the opportunity to reclaim the “party of ideas” and “party of the people” mantles, and create a culture of competition.

This is what the Republican Party is based on.  RebuildtheParty.com is not the answer.  It’s a step, one could argue a baby one at that.

Yet, when a baby takes their first step, we celebrate.  Why?  Not because they are an Olympic-level walker, but because they’re making progress.

But we don't have a say...

Most importantly, let’s open up the process so that we, the Republican people, have a say in electing our next Party Chairman.

This is just my point. And I don't see anything in Rebuild the Party's plan that even remotely gives ..."the Republican people" a say in anything.

You have 6,421 people all jumping up and down and demanding what?

1. Recruit 5 million new Republican online activists.

2. Hold campaigns and local parties accountable.

3. A more open technology ecosystem.

4. Rebuilding Our Grassroots Infrastructure.

5. Time for a new fundraising model.

6. A 25,000-strong Nationwide Campaign Force.

7. Reorganizing the RNC

8. The 435 district strategy.

9. But don't stop at Congress.

10. A "40 Under 40" initiative.

Which one of these ten points empowers the Republican membership within the party structure? Which one of these ten points give each and every Republican member a voice? Which one of these ten points gives each and every Republican member a chance to be heard? Which one of these ten points assures each and every Republican member their voices will be accurately heard?

Please, let me know which of the ten points you think will achieve these goals, so we can move forward in discussing this issue.

Creating Habits

Numbers 4-7 directly. Numbers 3 and 9 more indirectly. I could argue for the others too.

You are right that accomplishing the specific goals as outlined on RebuildtheParty.com are not the whole solution.  However, the other parts of that whole are more about philosophy and mindset; these are intangible, but nonetheless briefly addressed in the afterword of the Rebuild plan.

What the Rebuild plan seeks to do is instituionalize good habits.  Good habits are a start and lead to a changed mindset and sensitivies.  Think about it: if you stopped brushing your teeth for a couple of days, you would feel off.  Why would you feel off? Because you always brush your teeth.  Why do you always brush your teeth? Because you want your teeth to be clean, you believe in good hygiene.  WRONG. You brush your teeth because your parents made you when you were a kid, they forced you into the habit.  Because of that habit, you have been socialized to believe that clean teeth, fresh breath and gums are important.

I've worked at the RNC.  The RNC is ultimately an institution, the institution than runs the official "Republican Party."  In order for an institution to change, it must undertake specific reforms. If it does, it's a step in the right direction a.k.a. progress.

Excellent Thoughts

A great post, Mindy, with excellent insight.  It seems we agree at many levels.  Keep up the fight! :)

Giving party members a say

Fine, 4-7. Let's start with

4.  Rebuilding Our Grassroots Infrasture.

How do you suggest we rebuild our grassroot infrasture in a way that will directly give each party member a say in choosing the next Party Chair?

5. Time for a new fundraising model.

How does creating a new fundraising model directly give each party member a say in choosing the next Party Chair?

6. A 25,000-strong Nationwide Campaign Force.

How will creating a 25,000 strong Nationwide Campaign Force translate into directly giving every party member a say in choosing the next Party Chair?

7. Reorganizing the RNC

In what way are you suggesting that the RNC should be reorganized to directly give every party member a say in choosing the next Party Chair?

Splitting Hairs

The first goal of the Rebuild site is to impact the RNC Chairman's race.  The principles outlined on the site are for the direction and activities of the RNC.  Numbers 4-7 above give each person who cares to participate more power to influence the direction and activities of the party than they have currently.

Rebuild from the grassroot up

The first goal of the Rebuild site is to impact the RNC Chairman's race.  The principles outlined on the site are for the direction and activities of the RNC.

I thought the first goal of the Rebuild the Party plan was to rebuild the party from the grassroots up.  And, most importantly,  open up the process so that the membership can have their say in electing the next Party Chairman?

So the ten points of the plan is not designed to empower the membership from the grassroots up, but to impact the RNC Chairman's race. In other words, impact the party from the top down. Fair enough. I am glad we have that point finally cleared up.

We are making progress, undoubed progress. But I am still completely at a loss to understand what your last sentence means in practical terms:

Numbers 4-7 above give each person who cares to participate more power to influence the direction and activities of the party than they have currently.

If a grassroot member participates in any, or all, of the four points you have enumerated, how would his or her power to influence the direction and activities of the party increase?
