Open Thread on Future Roles of the Party: Bopp and Yue Offer Resolution Against Bailouts to RNC
From this morning's Washington Times:
In what would amount to a slap in the face to a sitting Republican president and the party's Senate and House leaders, national GOP officials, including the vice chairman of the Republican National Committee, are sponsoring a resolution opposing the resort to "socialist" means to save capitalism.
"We can't be a party of small government, free markets and low taxes while supporting bailouts and nationalizing industries, which lead to big government, socialism and high taxes at the expense of individual liberty and freedoms," said Solomon Yue, a cosponsor of a resolution that would put the RNC -- the party's national governing body -- on the record as opposing the U.S. government bailouts of the financial and auto industries ...
The RNC has never played a leading policy role or any policy role except once every four years in framing the national party platform, which is quickly forgotten and almost never referred to for another four years.
Part of the Rebuild the Party plan calls for significant changes in the way we run the party.
The power of traditional connections is being replaced by the power of mass connectedness. Politics is taking place on a grander stage than ever before, with millions, and not just tens of thousands -- participating directly in the process. Millions of people can not only vote, but they can organize with each other across geographic boundaries to build political power in real time. Their sheer scale allows them to rapidly outflank traditional power brokers in a way that simply wasn't possible before.
The Republican Party can no longer survive in a modern era if we resist this new reality. With our power in Washington waning, our grassroots are the source of our greatest strength -- not a problem to be managed. To revitalize ourselves, we must invite the crowd back in and tap their energy and creativity.
One can legitimately opine that this resolution authored by RNC Vice Chairman James Bopp comes from a realization from some RNC members about the importance of our grassroots infrastructure. But this resolution only offers more questions than answers that I could provide. Please share your thoughts on the following:
- If you were on the RNC, would you vote for the resolution? (I probably would.)
- In both the short term and long term, is it a good idea for the RNC to play an active philosophical-policy leadership role beyond the platform? Or should the party stick to reorganizing the infrastructure, tools and strategies for future election cycles?
- Should part of the "revitalization" of the GOP and "tapping the grassroots' energy and creativity" be public policy oriented?
- If the RNC were to take on more of a public policy role, how would that role differ if we were in the Congressional majority vs. minority? How would that role differ if we have the White House vs. not having the White House?
Comments and thoughts please.

Maximum Support for these Valiant RNC Revolutionaries...
...thanks Matt for being on top of this. We can be sure there will be a very well organized, well financed and "brutal" counterattack. We've got to back these individuals in every way possible.
This will be a test for "Rightroots". If we can't use the techno-sphere to rally behind these valiant RNC Revolutionaries, then what good are we? This is our chance to to introduce ourselves - The New Republican Party. Its time for the Base to "roar" again. Like it did back in June 07 when we defeated McCain/Kennedy.
And what about one of these individuals mentioned in the Hallow exclusive as a candidate for RNC Chair? Lets consider that. Darvin Dowdy
More Power To 'Em
Looks like that fight for the soul of the GOP is coming to a final stand. I believe Yue and Bopp are acting like principled revolutionaries, but they are going up against some serious political firepower.
I don't give em much of a chance.
Another view
There is nothing in the reports trickling out about the Bopp/Yue letter to suggest these gentlemen are informed by the concerns and aspirations expressed by GOP grassroots activists at sites such as The Next Right and Rebuild The Party. Noting in the means or ends of their efforts suggest anything other than a good old fashioned power grab by a group of dissident insiders.
Let's refrain from making them our heroes until we see that they want to reform the party, not simply take control of the RNC.
Support the idea nevertheless
The sooner that the Republican Party goes officially on record opposing Bailout Nation, the better off we will be to regaining power in 2010 and beyond. I don't know anything about Bopp or Yue either but their idea is definitely the right one.
As for the RNC playing policy roles: I can see pros and cons, but more pros really, especially if it can lead to something like a Contract for America in 2010 if our congressional candidates sign up for the RNC agenda.
right
This move basically has 2 outcomes- 1) it is a new version of the contract for america and the party goes back to putting its ideals into practice or 2) it is viewed as "too little, too late" for an organization and party that was willing to let its leaders spend into oblivion for the past 8 years. It doesn't help that this "awakening" was realized after the wall street and auto bailouts (under Bush) and now the RNC wants to hold the government accountable....now that Obama will be in office. That has a hint of "we're just the opposition party" to it.
But, as noted above, a new direction has to start somewhere. But if they don't come up with new ideas and keep running politicians that don't believe in small, limited government, they will be losing elections for a long time.
And, JS, what's your definition...
...of reform? And lets be clear on who has control of the party. Its the voters. The GOP Bass saw to it that the GOP became the minority party. I'd say that demonstrated a measure of control. When you can make a major political party all of a sudden irrelevant.
But I do see your point, JS. Its time for these "RNC Renegades" to present a "Contract With America '09". What's your 10 point plan Mr. Yue? Mr. Bopp? Mr. Emineth? Darvin Dowdy
Bopp And Yue Probably Have A Different Agenda
They are listed as the main powers behind the Conservative Steerig Committe that is attempting to sway things for Mike Duncan as Chair. I view this as an attempt to establish the conservative bona fides of the current RNC adminstration in advance of the debates, the Conservative Steering committess attempt to pre-empt growing support for the other candidates (Particularly Saul Anuzi and Ken Blackwell).
Where were they December 20th, October? They may have had an impact then when it mattered. Go ahead and have this vote, just do not be fooled.
So rcovington, you think this might be a ploy?...
...some sort of choreographed scheme? I'm not saying you're wrong, mind you. You may be right. But why? As it stood Mike Duncan was a shoe-in wouldn't you agree? At least the way I understood it. Why rile the sleeping beast? The Base or "public" was, for the most part, unaware of this gang of 168. In the dark. Now they're on Drudge front page. This Ralph Hallow guy at WT will make his bonus on this string of exclusives. It doesn't seem logical that it would be something contrived. But then, what do I know? I'm no insider, thats for sure. DD
Mike Duncan was never a shoe in...
It is standard practice that in the absence of a sitting President, and especially in the case of a National Party Leadership that has led the party to two straight shellackings that the leadership is replaced. The only two people that believe that Duncan was a shoe-in would be you and Duncan.
Bopp and Yue, along with prodding from Duncan, created the "Conservative Steering Committe" which is nothing more than attempt to restrict the smoke-filled room to Duncan supporters. This isn't the first contrivance, it another in a string.
