The GOP is NOT Dead
On my blog, Weapons of Mass Discussion, I recently put some numbers together taken from various CQ Politics articles that I think makes a point that isn't being made anywhere else. It is a point that really demonstrates the strength of the Republican Party in these troubling times. The point: The GOP has raised MORE money than the Democrats.
According to my math...
RNC = $143.3 million
NRCC = $69.3 million
NRSC = $47.9 million
GOP Total = $260.5 million
DNC = $77.6 million
DCCC = $92.6 million
DSCC = $76.5 million
DEM Total = $246.7 million
Caveat: My numbers do NOT include the presidential race fundraising numbers. But I'll point out that the difference between McCain and Obama in cash on hand is only $15 million -- nearly the difference between the GOP and DEM figures from above.
Now don't get me wrong, I think that the GOP is in some trouble -- particularly with conservatives -- but I don't think the situation is near as grim as it is being portrayed.

the problem isn't money
the problem is leadership
Agreed
Don't get me wrong, I do think that leadership represents a big part of our problem, but I do not believe that we are in as bad of shape as some would have us believe.
I also agree
I think if the leadership decided to well Lead... it would be very different
My point...
...was that the 527 media meme has been that the rank and file Republicans are demoralized and dejected. The fundraising numbers don't really show that to be true. I'd be interested in historical data on the fundraising to determine just what the differences between the R's and D's really is on where they donate their money to and when.
I think -- and somebody can prove me wrong if that's the case -- that R's tend to support the RNC more than the congressional committees; whereas, the D's have placed their faith and thuse their funding in the congressional committees.
Everybody seems fixated on trying to find the Second Coming of Reagan and the effect of that is creating a rather gloomy outlook. Yeah, we need real, effective leadership; but that wasn't my point. My point is that we aren't in as bad of shape as some would have us believe. Unfortunately, the guy with the best ideas doesn't win if he doesn't have the money to get his message out. Republicans still are bringing the money...
