Why do we allow politicians to collude against the people?
"People of the same trade seldom meet together, even for merriment and diversion, but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public..." - Adam Smith, The Wealth of Nations
One of the central political problems is not the confict between Republicans and Democrats, but the conflict between politicians and people.
- The incumbent protection acts (campaign finance reform)
- The incumbent slush funds (earmarks)
- Opaque and half-hearted ethics investigations
- The foot-dragging on transparency (Executive and Congressional)
- The legislative bundling process which allows politicians to pass unworthy legislation by bundling it with more popular legislation (Omnibus bills, reconciliation process, non-germane amendments, earmarks, etc).
We have a crisis of politicial collusion. Just as Adam Smith (and Public Choice Theory) predicted, our politicians create legislation, rules and processes that amount to a conspiracy to protect themselves. They collude against the public.
This is not new and it is not partisan.
- Congress has long exempted itself from the rules it applies to everybody else (e.g., OSHA, FOIA). Congress exempts itself from the oversight and accounting practices that it applies to businesses, and we end up with a budget process that is not transparent and politicians who are not accountable.
- The Obama administration believes torture was committed and the international laws by which the US abides have been violated. And yet, rather than pursue investigations and perhaps prosecutions, President Obama says "Nothing will be gained by spending our time and energy laying blame for the past", protecting both Republicans and Democrats who might be inconvenienced by an investigation.
- Sen. Stevens and Rep. Jefferson were generally slow-rolled and excused through the investigative process. President Clinton was given a slap on the wrist and all hell broke loose over him getting that. Abusive police officers and judges tend to get defended/excused for misconduct, or just minor administrative punishments. The Milwaukee police chief openly flouts the law, and the Mayor defends him. As happens with so many questionable and/or indefensible politicians, the "aw heck, let's just let bygones be bygones" tendency ultimately wins.
- If the Senate considered a $50 million earmark for a musuem in Nevada as a standalone piece of legislation, it would almost certainly fail 98-2. 98 Senators simply would not be able to justify spending the countries money on parochial favors. And yet, if we had a piece of legislation spending $50 million for a musuem in every state ($2.5 billion total), it would likely pass by an overwhelming margin. None of the expenditures are any more worthy the the musuem that failed 98-2, but the politicians have colluded to buy more votes.
This is, of course, all done For Your Own Good. But Adam Smith also said, “I have never known much good done by those who affected to trade for the public good.”
If Republicans want to rebuild their credibility, they might start by putting a stop to some of this political collusion.

You are absolutely right...
...in every respect, Jon, with the exception of your conclusion. Republicans and Democrats by themselves are absolutely powerless to affect significant political change in this regard, that too, of course, is a political collusion.
But I think we do have a political awakening of sorts amongst the grassroots of each party to this failure of our political system, most recently represented by the Tea Party demonstrations. While my crystal ball is as cloudy as everybody else's as to its final remedy, I can't help but think the growing use of the internet to rapidly disseminate information will help give voice to We, the people, so they can play a corrective role in our democracy.

Re: Why do we allow politicians to collude against the people?
Because back when the deficit was comparatively small, such collusion provided attractive benefits (not necessarily financial) to the voters, and the costs were so widely dispersed that they seemed acceptable.
Now the costs are enormous and some of us understand that the benefits are far below fair value (or outright negative). Unfortunately, society has been booby-trapped so that removing those benefits would cause prohibitive political turmoil (unless people get more desperate than they are today). Having conned us into relying on overpriced benefits, the political class now uses those benefits as hostages to keep us in line.
We weren't necessarily brought to this pass by a nefarious master plan. Good intentions, slippery slopes and untended consequences could have done the trick.
However much our government wastes
It ain't 40 Trillion, you motherfucker.
Now can we please look at the heart of the Corporate Corruption that is coursing through the veins of our proud country?
Stop
We've put up with a lot of trolling from you, but I don't intend to tolerate behavior like this. I don't care for policing commenters, but I'll do it if you can't either behave civilly or go away.
Policing Commenters? What Next?
This site was a great idea and it's not a bad place, but where is it going?
1. Maybe you should police comments and be more involved. I wouldn't care to police comments either; the crux is how serious you are about growing the site. With too little oversight, extremists will overrun the place; with too much, the place will lose its openness and vitality.
2. I have mixed feelings about the leftist commenters here. Some of them make legitimate points. Some of those points advance the purpose of reinventing the American right. Other points are contrary to anything a revived American right is ever likely to stand for.
I have litle love for Bushies and similar types, but they at least pay lip service to conservatism.
3. In the next site upgrade--you do intend to upgrade, don't you?
--improved archiving, search and navigation capabilities would be very welcome. The site is almost a year old. If lessons have been learned, it should be possible to retrieve them.
3a. Some of the user blogs are quite good. How about a clickable listing?
3b. How about an archive clickable by date?
3c. There are some insightful commenters here whose contributions should be encouraged. How about an upgraded search engine that allows searching by keyword, poster, and commenter?
4. At present, my personal situation does not allow donation of cash or time. Sorry, all I can contribute
is bright ideas that involve work by other people...
Good government is the road back
I have often said that road back for the GOP is good government. It is true to our credo, valuable to voters and capable of renewing our brand.
However, I don't see the current crew embracing that approach. The good government agenda will only be championed by an outsider for the reasons Jon has outlined.
ayiyi. Yes, good government would be a great start.
particularly in light of the Kleptocracy that governed the most recent monstrous brand of Conservatism.
Truly slapworthy
This is exactly what he deserved for a minor non-political infraction. What should Bush get for subborning torture? For dragging the country to war by falsifying intelligence?
Henke was correct to post this in a place Republicans will see it. They are the primary opponents of ethics reforms in congress. Except for campaign finance restrictions, Democrats support most of Henke's agenda.
Act on such laws.
The great thing about the political scenario in this country is that we elect our government and then we somehow manage to get laws such OSHA too but thereafter the politicians will just not get them implemented into laws and thereafter there is no compliance with these laws.
The laws are different for different people but I think more OSHA compliance training will help create more awareness regarding the use and accplication of this useful law thereby forcing governments to act on such laws.
