Congratulations, Sen. Obama: An Open Letter to the President-
Elect

I'm writing this post from my desk, As you will see, it is a congratulatory message to Barack Obama.
Dear Mr. President-Elect:
Congratulations on Tuesday night. As activist of AFT's e-Activists who share my philosophy of government., I am proud of your accomplishment. your campaign has shown that a centralized long term campaign organization is not mutually exclusive with decentralized short term action plans. Over the past decade, failed campaigns have shown that grassroots action by itself cannot succeed without direction.
SINCERELY YOURS
ENGR.DR.SAMUEL.ADENIYI.AJANAKU
Dear Samuel.Adeniyi.:
Thank you for advising me of your support for the establishment of personal retirement accounts within the Social Security system. I appreciate hearing your comments on this extremely important issue.
Although no Social Security reform legislation has been formally considered on the Senate floor this session, I have been following this discussion closely. I understand that some adjustments may need to be made to preserve the financial integrity of the program for current beneficiaries and to assure that workers who are paying Social Security taxes today get a solid return on their investment when they eventually retire. However, it is important to also remember that Social Security provides an important safety net to millions of older Americans, and that commitment should be respected. And, as we evaluate any reform proposal, we should not ignore the implications for today's workers, and their children, of the government potentially borrowing trillions of dollars to pay for the transition to private accounts at a time of historically high federal deficits and escalating national debt. After all, we are creating a crushing financial burden that will fall on the next generation to pay off.
It is my hope that the effort to “reform†Social Security will be undertaken in a bipartisan spirit that protects the basic integrity of the Social Security program. Seniors have lived up to their end of the bargain, and workers who are paying into the system have the right to the expectation of a reasonable return on their investment in the Social Security System when they retire. The government must live up to its responsibility in this contract as it looks for ways to protect the investment of current workers.
Again, thank you for contacting me about Social Security reforms. Please stay in touch in the days ahead.
Sincerely,
Barack Obama
United States Senator

Dear engr.dr.samuel.adeniyi ajanaku,
Thank you. Barack Obama's historic election as president is in
no small part due to the hard work of people like you. From the
primaries through Election Day, thousands of you showed that
this election was too important to sit on the sidelines. I have
been so proud to hear the stories of AFT members making their
voices heard by volunteering in the field, hosting debate-watch
parties, sharing their stories and photos from the campaign
trail, answering surveys about the issues and candidates, and so
much more. The AFT's e-Activists truly have demonstrated
democracy in action.
This is a tremendous victory, but it is a beginning, not an end.
President-elect Obama inherits considerable challenges--a severe
economic crisis, a broken healthcare system, the need to revamp
federal education law once and for all to address the
unacceptable achievement gap between students from different
backgrounds, enormous infrastructure strains, and American
troops engaged in two wars. Our elected officials have huge
tasks ahead of them, and our continued civic engagement will be
crucial. We must continue to be heard. We must remain active
participants in our great democracy. The AFT e-Activist program
will continue to provide a way.
Again, thank you for all you did to bring about this great
victory. We couldn't have done it without you.
In unity,
Randi Weingarten
AFT president
